Few names in the RV world are as well-known as Fleetwood RV. For decades, Fleetwood has been synonymous with family adventures, dependable construction, and innovative design. From humble beginnings in a small workshop to becoming one of the largest RV manufacturers in the United States, Fleetwood’s story reflects the growth of the modern RV lifestyle.

The Early Days

Fleetwood was founded in 1950 by John C. Crean in southern California. Originally called Coach Specialties Company, it started out making small travel trailer window blinds and aluminum siding.

By 1953, Crean renamed the company Fleetwood Trailer Company (inspired by the luxury Fleetwood body style on Cadillac automobiles), and the business quickly expanded into producing travel trailers.

Growth in the 1960s and 1970s

Fleetwood’s reputation for affordable, reliable travel trailers fueled rapid growth. By the 1960s, the company was a leading RV manufacturer, producing both travel trailers and motorhomes.

Key milestones:

1960s – Fleetwood entered the motorhome market with compact and efficient designs.
1965 – The company went public, fueling expansion.
1970s – Fleetwood became the largest RV manufacturer in the U.S., selling thousands of units annually.

Fleetwood’s popularity was boosted by the American family road trip boom, as more families sought affordable ways to travel and vacation together.

Innovation and Market Leadership

Through the 1980s and 1990s, Fleetwood continued to dominate the RV industry. It became the No. 1 selling motorhome brand in North America for over 20 consecutive years.

Bounder – Introduced in 1985, this motorhome revolutionized RV design with basement storage, allowing more space and functionality. The Bounder remains one of the most popular motorhomes ever built.
Southwind, Pace Arrow, and Tioga – Beloved motorhome lines that offered comfort and innovation at different price points.
Discovery & Expedition – Diesel pushers that introduced luxury features at a more accessible price.

Fleetwood became known for blending practical innovation with family-friendly design, keeping RVing accessible to a wide range of customers.

Challenges and Changes

Like many RV manufacturers, Fleetwood faced ups and downs tied to the economy.

2009 – During the Great Recession, Fleetwood Enterprises filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Later that year, American Industrial Partners (AIP) purchased the motorhome division, rebranding it as Fleetwood RV, Inc.
The towable RV business was sold separately to another manufacturer.

This restructuring allowed Fleetwood RV to continue producing its legendary motorhomes under new ownership.

Fleetwood RV Today

Today, Fleetwood RV operates as part of the REV Recreation Group, which also includes Holiday Rambler, American Coach, and Monaco. The company is headquartered in Decatur, Indiana, where its motorhomes are still built.
